Australia Day in Enmore Park

Planes roaring overhead, a band with a woman lead singer doing Jimmy Barnes covers, people dancing with kids and babies, everyone with their picnic rugs, and dogs galore. Bats flapping powerfully against the breeze. Then the fireworks. It's quite a small park, and only about 50 square metres were cordoned off for the pyrotechnicians. Chrysanthemums, crackles, wagon wheels and strobes were bursting right above our heads and were incredibly close. There was no music while they were going off, which was wonderful because for the first time since I was a kid I could really hear them. They crack and crackle, screech, fizz and bang. Some sound like massive sparklers, others like surf breaking. Silver streaks wheezed their way upwards before turning into delicate stars.

Strictly Marrickville

Sorry for ignoring you dear blog, but I've been so busy. I went to Melbourne for a cosmetic surgery conference (yes, really). I had dinner with most of the Melbourne Sarsaparilla folk while I was there, which was enjoyable and interesting. It's strange that you can be quite intimate and comfortable with people online, then - shock - find on meeting them that it's just like meeting a stranger... and what's more, that they have bodies. Later, after a few drinks and a beautiful dinner, things relax & you realise you do actually share something unique with these people.

Okay, I admit I haven't been completely ignoring Marrickvillia, in fact, there is something excitingly super-nerdy in the pipeline. In the meantime, here are a couple of shots you might like.

On a beautiful sunny afternoon this kid stopped his play momentarily to grin at the camera.

I took this photo because of the faintly visible rainbow and the plane, and then realised that the building on the left with the hills hoist on the roof is one of Marrickville's famous landmarks. It was used for the rooftop dancing lessons scenes in Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom.

Worlds Overhead

Driving home late last week, with Sailor, I stopped at this little park in the Marrickville suburb of Sydenham to give her a poo-run. It was a humid, still night. The cicadas trilled, a couple of other people wandered about while their dogs went all doggy, and it was rather peaceful in the twilight. Then the sky was filled, just filled, with an aeroplane. Its wing span touched the horizons, its landing gear nearly bumped my head, its roar was just unbelievable. Its lights lit up the park & it smelled strongly of fuel.

But it passed quickly, and then there we all were again, as we had been, sniffing & strolling. It was a bit like having seen a pterodactyl, a leviathan and alien creature, and I loved it. I thought of all the people in that little overhead world. No doubt I'd be less enthusiastic if I lived right under the flight path.

I went back in the daytime to try to get some photos, but in the hour I was there no plane flew over. The park's furniture is fascinating though, witty and on-topic. The main area is set out like a giant loungeroom:

Here are Richard and Sailor on the sofa, to give you an idea of perspective:

There are mosaics done by local primary children, featuring planes and homes, with Italian, English and Vietnamese writing:

There's a humongous teapot:

And my favourite, the giant mantelpiece (the "fireplace" is a kiosk) complete with doily, Deco mirror and ornaments.

Aerial Peace

Have a look at this eerie little film set in a Marrickville backyard.
