Shop of the Week

This greengrocer in Illawarra Road (I don't know the address but he's directly opposite the Centrelink) might be the cheapest in Sydney. The owner unloads each morning - from his open-trailor truck - boxes of whatever was cheap & in bulk at the markets. There's never anything out of season & whatever is in season is here in huge piles, almost free. The shop totally lacks glamour, it's painted about 6 different colours at random & is also somewhat lacking in hygiene. You see the occasional rotting vegetable, and once - yes - I noted what I think was a rat poo (the size of my fingernail, ovoid, glossy brown & smooth) on the counter. But hey, wouldn't you prefer a little rat poo that can easily be washed away to having to brave the hideous fluorescent aisles of plasticated and hugely overpriced fruit & veg at somewhere like the evil Woolworths, and then suffer the indignity of standing in a queue worrying about your credit card balance?

I went to ALDI today and bought bulk supplies of tins, muesli, juice etc etc, which is good but we could really use a fruit shop like that around here.

We're really lucky in Campsie as well. There's 'The World of Fruit' -- a humungous, barn-like structure on the corner of Amy Street and Beamish Street that stocks absolutely everything you could imagine. Possibly not as cheap as your place, though.

I know this man and he once told me that he could be retired but he runs this shop so that 'the poor can eat'. The shop is always busy and certainly he provides a service for the local community!

Hi Ausblackhawk,

Is it the man who runs the greengrocery who you know? That's amazing if he keeps running the shop for that reason... today he has five boxes of zucchinis out the front - the plump pale green sort - for only $1.49 a kilo. I have a feeling he also delivers free to all the old age pensioners about the place. Perhaps I need a new series of postings called "Saints of Marrickville"!
