Orlan - Free public lecture - Monday 30 July

This is what I've been busy organising for the last month. I am hugely excited about hosting Orlan in Sydney and can't wait to meet her. A whole chapter of my forthcoming book is devoted to her work... Orlan is one of the most fascinating, adventurous and misunderstood artists in the world. Don't miss this free lecture - for most Australians this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

FREE PUBLIC LECTURE at the art gallery of new south wales

Monday 30 July, 2007

“This Is My Body, This Is My Software:
between western culture and non-western culture”

French artist Orlan uses plastic surgery as her medium. Between 1990 and 1993, she underwent a series of choreographed surgical ‘performances’. The talk will comprise a survey of Orlan's work in order to ask questions about the status of the body in society. Orlan lives and works between Los Angeles, New York and Paris.

Venue: Domain Theatre, Lower Level 3
Time: 5.15 for a 5.45pm start
No bookings, come early to ensure a seat by 5.30pm
Refreshments and exhibition viewing of contemporary galleries at 6.45pm

Hey, where's some comments?

Hell but I'm glad I haven't got a blog.

I remember reading about Orlan a few years ago, and thought 'gee whiz,' it was certainly a tour de force where body art is concerned, still is, certainly a step farther than the Barbie's of this world.

I'm going to check out what work shifts I'm working, because it sounds interesting.

It's not art, it's social comment, and that's all.

Any fool could do it.

And many do.

She is a brave and fascinating woman ... and
'the status of the body in society' ?

Right 'Up There' I would think.
we are obsessed with it.
cosmetics.
gymnasiums.
tanning salons.
cholesterol levels.
selling/designing/buying far more clothing for it than any one us actually need.

I've changed my mind, it could be art.
